Selecting a Swivel Before deciding upon the type and size of swivel to purchase, give careful consideration to overloads, shock loads, and bearings. When referring to the load capacity tables, it is best to select the next larger swivel than is indicated in the tabulation. This will provide some insurance against damage resulting form overloads, shock loads, and increases in speed of rotation. Too frequently, a swivel is purchased to drill to certain depths; later, the operator will have occasion to drill deeper than was anticipated. The swivel is overloaded as a result. It is false economy of the worst sort to use a swivel that is too small for the job. Excessive cost of upkeep, plus shutdown time of the rig, will soon amount to many times the added cost of a larger swivel. |
